Expeditions in the New Forest
Supervisors in the
New Forest should be:
> Able to navigate and supervise the group in the New Forest terrain (New forest is terrain 0 BUT navigation is still challenging in parts).
> Be familiar with the D of E Award 20 conditions.
> Hold a nights away permit or the group must have been issued with an event passport by the nights away holder.
> Be approved by their DC/DESC.
In D of E terms a supervisor must be in the area and actively supervising the group.
Assessors in the New Forest should be familiar with the area/Duke of Edinburgh’s Award and approved by their District Commissioner/Adviser. At Bronze they must not have trained the group and at Silver Level be independent of the Scout Group/Unit. From April 2011 they must hold the assessor permit. The New Forest Panel can provide assessors and full information can be found on their website: http://newforestean.org.uk/.
The Forestry Commission allow the use of certain areas of the forest for Wild Camping. All expeditions on these sites must closely follow the conditions laid down and be accompanied by someone holding a Greenfield Nights Away Permit or a hillwalking permit that includes lightweightcamping in remote areas. Generally, these need booking at least a month before the camp date and a permit is issued allowing you to camp (contact details below). No toilet or water facilities are provided (water will need to be transported to the site).
Forestry Commission public sites may be used, providing you pre-book with the Forestry Commission (there is a limit to the no of D of E groups on site at any one time). The following sites are prohibited:
